Guwahati: Bongaigaon district officials stripped Kohinoor Khatun of her post as President of the Rangapani Gaon Panchayat. The move follows a formal inquiry into claims that she lied about her schooling. Khatun used fake documents to secure her position.

Khatun initially won a seat as a ward member before her peers voted her into the top spot. A complaint landed on the desk of the Chief Executive Officer of the Bongaigaon Zila Parishad. It alleged her election affidavit held falsified records. Investigators checked the files and found the claims held weight. The administration confirmed the fraud, ending her tenure.

"The educational qualification mentioned in the affidavit submitted by Khatun during the election process was fake and contained discrepancies," official sources stated. This discovery has locals questioning how candidates get cleared to run in the first place.

The district will now fill the vacancy. They plan to follow the rules laid out in the Panchayati Raj Act. Further actions are pending as the office works to move on from the scandal.
