Imphal: Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi filed her nomination papers today for the lone Rajya Sabha seat representing Manipur. The submission at the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat marks a significant step toward an expected unopposed victory for the BJP candidate, as no other contenders filed papers before the deadline.
Sarda Devi, who previously served as the first female president of the BJP’s Manipur unit, submitted three sets of nomination papers backed by party legislators. While official confirmation awaits the final scrutiny process on June 9 and a withdrawal window closing June 11, the lack of rivals makes her election almost certain. The formal polling date is set for June 18.
Following the filing, Sarda Devi expressed her commitment to advocating for state interests in the Upper House. She identified the protection of territorial integrity and the welfare of women impacted by ethnic violence as her primary focus areas. Reflecting on her past relief work, she highlighted the importance of bringing these challenges to the national stage.
"As a woman, I will focus on development-related issues concerning women and work towards their empowerment," she said. She also extended her thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the broader party leadership for the nomination. Several high-ranking officials, including Chief Minister Yumkham Khemchand Singh, attended the filing ceremony to support her candidacy.
