Kohima: Eight lawmakers from Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party ditched their home team to join the Bharatiya Janata Party on September 23. The party change happened at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, party president Nitin Nabin, Dr. Sambit Patra, Anil K. Antony, and Meghalaya state president Rikman G. Momin watched them sign on.
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton welcomed the new recruits to the BJP Pariwar. He sent his best wishes as they start this new path of public service. Patton said the move represents a “significant political milestone” for the region. The addition of these eight members brings the BJP seat count in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from two up to ten. They are now the second-largest party in the House.
Patton believes their experience will help push the development agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expects the group to keep working toward the vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas for the people of the North-East.
