Guwahati: The Barak Democratic Front wants the Centre to restart the Doordarshan Kendra in Silchar. The facility once broadcast local news and cultural heritage but now sits on the edge of permanent closure. Neglect destroyed it. Outdated gear sits idle while the building falls into disrepair.

BDF Media Cell Convenor Jaydeep Bhattacharya claims political apathy killed the station. He points to the shuttered Sugar Mill, Badarpur Textile Mill, and Panchgram Paper Mill as proof of a trend. The group fears the broadcaster is next on the list. Local representatives remain silent. Nobody speaks for the station.

Bhattacharya says the current terrestrial system is obsolete. To fix it, the government needs a dedicated satellite channel and a new earth station. He suggests starting with 12 hours of programming daily. The BDF argues the region has plenty of media talent ready to work. "The recruitment process should prioritise professionals with the expertise and commitment needed to establish and manage high-quality broadcasting services," Bhattacharya stated.

The group claims Silchar MP Kanad Purkayastha is already talking to the central government about the facility. The BDF promises to back these efforts. They say the valley deserves a platform to share its culture and aspirations with the rest of the world.
