Guwahati: The Barak Democratic Front is demanding immediate arrests following a violent assault on journalist Rahul Chakraborty and former Municipal Chairman Sukhendu Bikash Pal in Sribhumi. The incident left Chakraborty with critical eye injuries. He remains in serious condition.
Pradip Dutta Roy, the BDF Chief Convener, slammed the assault as a direct strike against democratic values. He is pushing local police to run a thorough and impartial investigation. Roy did not hold back on his frustration regarding the handling of the suspects. He noted that the initial group arrested for the crime walked free within a single day. The BDF leader views this early release as proof of administrative failure.
"The development reflected either an administrative failure or negligence on the part of the authorities," Roy said. He warned that if the state tries to sweep this under the rug, protests will erupt across the Barak Valley. The front is now calling on the public to defend independent reporting. Journalists in the region face rising threats. Roy believes officials must act now before the situation boils over into widespread civil unrest.
