Agartala: A 26-year-old Bangladeshi national was killed in a firing incident involving the Border Security Force along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Unakoti district. The man, identified as Mujibur Rahman Mujib from the Moulvibazar district of Bangladesh, died on Friday evening near Latiyapura village.
Police reports indicate that a group of individuals crossed into Indian territory and gathered near the border, purportedly to engage in smuggling. BSF personnel patrolling the area attempted to intercept the group, resulting in the fatal shooting. While residents claimed three others were injured during the encounter, officials have not confirmed further casualties.
Authorities discovered a significant quantity of Indian-made bidis at the scene. Police believe the items were destined for illegal transport across the border. Regarding the status of the investigation, an official stated, “The exact cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.”
Mujib’s body was taken to Unakoti District Hospital for examination before being handed over to Bangladeshi officials at the Manu Land Customs point on Saturday. Following a flag meeting between border security representatives, authorities have initiated a formal inquiry into the event. Security forces have since strengthened their presence along the border to prevent further unauthorized crossings.
