Guwahati: Bajali MLA Dharmeswar Roy has ordered the district administration to shut down illegal mining operations in the Pahumara and Kaldiya rivers. The order follows a field inspection of flood-hit zones where riverbeds are being stripped of sand and minerals. This unchecked extraction threatens embankment stability and worsens dangerous riverbank erosion.

Roy wants answers. He demanded a formal inquiry into reports that Forest Department staff might be helping the illegal operators. He stated, "No individual, irrespective of position, should be spared if found violating the law."

The administration must now act to clear the riverbeds. Officials face pressure to stop the destruction before more embankments fail. Roy warned that anyone involved in the racket will face severe consequences.
