Guwahati: Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out a sweeping economic plan during the July 10 budget presentation. The state wants to turn its tea estates and golf courses into a top-tier luxury travel circuit. Assam currently maintains three 18-hole championship golf courses and 10 nine-hole sites, many tucked inside historic tea gardens.

Government officials hope to draw wealthy travelers from around the world. The new Tea and Golf Trail will lean on partnerships with local tea estates and the hospitality sector to drive growth. It is a big bet on high-end tourism.

The state also intends to put Assamese food on the map. Baruah announced plans to support entrepreneurs opening authentic restaurants in every state capital across India. While private owners will run the kitchens, the government will provide a shared brand identity and menu. This aims to push local agricultural products into new markets.

Meanwhile, the agarwood industry is getting a serious overhaul. The government is forming a Cabinet Task Force to turn Assam into India's central hub for agarwood production. The task force will map out everything from planting to exporting.

Baruah said the state intends to develop a strategy covering the entire value chain. The objective is to maximize commercial potential while fixing regulations to make business easier. This strategy aims to build a stronger, more diverse rural economy across the board.
