Assam Traditional Namghar Heads to Pune Campus

Guwahati: Assam is bringing its ancient spiritual roots to Maharashtra. A traditional Namghar opens at the Sarhad Pune campus in Gujarwadi Katraj on September 30. This space offers Northeast residents a home for their culture while helping locals learn about traditions from the region. The project relies on the legacy of 15th-century reformer Srimanta Sankardev. His movement centered on social equality and community gathering.

Sarhad Pune supports students from border areas and conflict zones, including those from Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, and Assam. Sanjay Nahar leads the organization. He views the new building as a hub for unity. "The Namghar would be more than a place of worship and would serve as a centre for cultural exchange and national integration," Nahar said. The site will host Borgeet, Dihanaam, Bhaona, and Sattriya dance performances.

Organizers expect Sri Sri Dr Pitambar Dev Goswami of the Auniati Satra and Nagaland University Chancellor Dr Samudra Gupta Kashyap to attend the launch. Beyond worship, the facility aims to bridge gaps between Assam's Neo-Vaishnavite beliefs and the Bhakti and Warkari traditions of Maharashtra. Both share deep roots in devotional music and social participation.

The Namghar will serve as a hub for academic talks and community events. Students will study philosophy and the arts within its walls. "We want the Namghar to be a living classroom. It should not remain a static structure. Students should experience the music, theatre, dance, philosophy and community traditions associated with it," Nahar added. The project turns a building into an interactive space for national integration.
