Guwahati: Nearly one in five homes in Assam using the PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar program now pays nothing for electricity. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed this financial shift on June 25. The program covers residential households across the state.
Assam ranks in the top five states for rolling out these solar systems. The initiative provides financial aid to help families install panels and generate their own power. This move cuts reliance on the traditional grid while boosting the state renewable energy output.
Sarma highlighted the shift as a major win for local families. He credited the project with easing economic pressure on citizens. "Seventeen per cent of Assam's solar households have paid zero electricity bills. This is the transformation which PM Surya Ghar has brought about in Assam," the Chief Minister stated.
The government plans to keep pushing the solar scheme. They want to cut energy costs and meet long term sustainability targets. By helping residents generate clean power, the state hopes to drive wider economic gains.
