Aizawl: Security forces in Mizoram recently executed two significant operations, resulting in the seizure of smuggled foreign cigarettes worth over Rs 11.25 crore and the arrest of a militant carrying an explosive device. The primary anti-smuggling raid took place in Aizawl district after the Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence received reports regarding a stockpile of illicit tobacco products.

Acting on intelligence, officials searched a rented house in Zemabawk North, where they uncovered 469 cartons containing roughly 4.7 million cigarette sticks. The contraband reportedly entered India via the Champhai sector along the Myanmar border. One suspect was apprehended at the scene and transferred to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further questioning.

In a separate incident near the Seling area, Assam Rifles personnel and Mizoram Police intercepted a Myanmar-based militant named Yening Ku. During the encounter, security teams recovered an Improvised Explosive Device, antenna components, and various uniform items. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Aizawl Police Station.

A defence spokesperson stated that these successful operations reflected the effectiveness of intelligence-based coordination among security and law enforcement agencies in tackling smuggling, illegal trafficking, and security threats along the India-Myanmar border. The region, particularly areas bordering Myanmar’s Chin State, remains a sensitive corridor for illicit activities, prompting heightened vigilance from forces stationed across the Northeast.
