Imphal: The Assam Rifles recently spearheaded a series of initiatives at the historic Khongjom War Memorial in Manipur’s Kakching district to promote cultural preservation. The project began with a collaborative assessment between the Assam Rifles and local district officials to determine restoration needs and enhance the site's overall maintenance.
As part of the outreach program, the Assam Rifles organized an educational campaign focusing on the 1891 Battle of Khongjom. The event drew 114 participants, including 64 NCC cadets, 20 students from Slopeland Higher Secondary School, and 20 students from the Assam Rifles Public School. Through interactive sessions, the students learned about the bravery of the Manipuri warriors who fought in the battle and the importance of protecting the region's historical landmarks.
The initiative concluded on June 1 with a major cleanliness drive at the memorial complex. Assam Rifles personnel joined the students and cadets to clear pathways and public areas to beautify the site. During the event, senior officials from the Assam Rifles urged the youth to take an active role in safeguarding the nation's heritage for future generations. Local residents praised the effort for fostering civic awareness and deepening the community's connection to Manipur’s history.
