Guwahati: The Assam government is finalizing extensive preparations for the annual Ambubachi Mela at the historic Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. The festival, which begins on June 22, honors the symbolic menstruation cycle of Goddess Maa Kamakhya and consistently draws hundreds of thousands of devotees and saints from around the globe.
Authorities expect a record footfall of nearly 800,000 people this year. To accommodate the influx, Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog announced that three large camps have been constructed. The state is also prioritizing infrastructure improvements, including road resurfacing to ensure better connectivity near the Nilachal Hills.
Operational plans include a new public announcement system to manage large crowds and dedicated measures to maintain sanitation across the site. Special provisions have been created for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities to improve accessibility. Regarding state tourism, Minister Neog noted that Assam has already seen 8.5 million domestic and 42,000 foreign visitors this year, stating, "Assam has received approximately 8.5 million domestic tourists and around 42,000 foreign tourists so far."
To ensure public safety, food inspectors are monitoring quality standards throughout the festival grounds. Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayanta Sarathi Borah has introduced a strict traffic plan, banning private vehicles beyond Nursery Point. Supply trucks will only be granted access between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM to minimize congestion during peak hours.
