Guwahati: Assam Police official Sambhavi Mishra faces heavy heat after allegedly abusing her power against two reporters. The Deputy Commissioner of Police for Central Guwahati reportedly threatened and detained journalists Samsul Rahman and Bibhash Das on Sunday. The clash erupted at the Pragjyotishpur Police Station near Guwahati.
The reporters were seeking facts on Abhimanyu Das, a man linked to an arms smuggling case and the death of BJP leader Indrani Tohbildar. Mishra labeled these questions irrelevant before the situation spiraled. The journalists say the Satgaon Police Station officer forced them to go to the Pragjyotishpur office under orders from the DCP.
Mishra allegedly denied the men a place to sit. She demanded to know their professional history while seizing their phones. The reporters claim the officer went on the offensive. She told them, "Do you know who I am? I am an IPS officer. Do you know my rank? How dare you question me? I can ruin your career."
Press clubs across Assam are furious. Groups including the Guwahati Press Club and the Assam Union of Working Journalists want a public apology and a formal inquiry. They plan to take their complaints to the Chief Minister and the state police leadership. A protest meeting is set for July 11. Police officials have not yet commented on the claims.
