Shillong: Assam’s Lachit Barphukan Police Academy is becoming a national hub for law enforcement. Police from multiple states now train at the Dergaon facility. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the school prepares officers for shifting threats like cybercrime and digital fraud. It is time to evolve. "The future of policing demands that we stay ahead of the curve," Sarma said.
Located in the Golaghat district, the campus opened its first phase in March 2025. This initial build cost Rs 167.4 crore and features a five-storey academic block. It houses smart classrooms, research labs, weapon simulators, a museum, and a parade ground. Officials plan to invest a total of Rs 1,050 crore to complete the multi-phase project.
The academy is already drawing recruits from far outside Assam. In August 2025, 700 Goa Police officers finished a 43-week basic course at the site. Forces from Manipur also use the grounds for training. The institution covers digital forensics, disaster response, and internal security.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah initially launched the project. He predicted the site could become the country’s leading training institution within five years. Sarma confirmed the state is moving toward that goal as it builds capacity for the entire Northeast and beyond.
