Assam Plans High-Tech Makeover for Bhupen Hazarika Memorial

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wants to drag a local landmark into the future. On July 11, he announced a full-scale plan to overhaul the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Tirtha in Jalukbari. The goal is to turn the memorial into an immersive cultural destination.

Visitors can soon expect virtual and augmented reality experiences. This tech upgrade lets people explore the life and work of the legendary artist in a completely new way. The government also plans to roll out digital platforms to hook the younger generation on Hazarika’s massive catalog of work.

Construction crews will build an open-air stage for live performances and local events. A dedicated state committee will manage the site to ensure it stays active throughout the year. Sarma described the vision for the site during a press briefing, saying the initiative is intended for "preserving and showcasing the legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika while creating a vibrant cultural hub for artists, visitors and future generations."

This move positions the site as a focal point for the region’s heritage. The state hopes to bring more people to the memorial by blending history with modern tools. It remains a work in progress for the government.
