Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on Wednesday, establishing a unified legal framework for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. The new legislation applies to all citizens regardless of their religious background. With this move, Assam joins Uttarakhand and Gujarat as one of the few states to adopt such a code.

BJP president Nitin Nabin praised the decision as a historic milestone that promotes equal rights and a uniform legal system. Nabin stated that the move reflects the party's commitment to justice for all citizens without appeasement. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for successfully implementing the policy.

The bill passed despite pushback from opposition parties, who had urged the assembly to send the legislation to a select committee for deeper review. Proponents of the bill argue that it strengthens national unity and social harmony in line with the vision of a stronger India.
