Assam Pair Jailed Following Attempted Murder Plot in Goalpara

Guwahati: A woman and her alleged lover are in judicial custody following a violent conspiracy to kill the woman's husband in Assam's Goalpara district. The attack occurred at West Simulbari village within the jurisdiction of the Lakhipur Police Station.

Authorities allege that the victim's wife maintained a long-term illicit relationship with Mofidul Islam, who is a relative of her husband, Shafiqul Islam. Investigators believe the pair conspired to murder Shafiqul because they viewed him as a barrier to their affair.

The incident unfolded on May 26 after Shafiqul returned home from Guwahati to celebrate Eid with his family. Around 2 am, his wife reportedly lured him outside under the guise of going to the restroom. Once he was outside, Mofidul Islam allegedly ambushed Shafiqul with a sharp weapon, inflicting critical injuries before fleeing the scene.

Family members alerted the Lakhipur Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation. Police arrested the wife first, followed by the apprehension of Mofidul Islam, who had been hiding. Officer Jiban Daimari confirmed that police successfully recovered the weapon used in the attack. Shafiqul Islam remains hospitalized and in critical condition as the investigation continues.
