Guwahati: Nagaon-Batadrava MLA Rupak Sarma stepped away from his political duties this week to take part in a traditional Assamese Bhaona. Performing at the Puranigudam Koraligaon Bor Namghar in Nagaon, the legislator portrayed the character of Indrajit in a production titled Balibadh.
The performance took place on the final night of a three-day religious festival. Sarma delivered his lines in the traditional Brajavali language, marking his debut as a Bhaona performer. He entered the stage with a dance and maintained a high level of enthusiasm throughout the play, which reflects the ideals of Srimanta Sankardeva.
Popular actor Dipjyoti Keot, known for his work on the television serial Beharbari Outpost, joined Sarma on stage as a fellow demon character. The event drew a significant crowd, including Devashish Sharma, who gathered to watch the cultural production.
Reflecting on the experience, Sarma noted the significance of his involvement in the historic arts of the region. He stated, "As the MLA of Batadrava, the birthplace of the revered saint, it was a matter of pride and privilege to be associated with the state's rich Vaishnavite cultural tradition."
