Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front MLA Rafiqul Islam wants action on the Assam National Register of Citizens. He demands national identity cards for everyone on the list. He also wants rejection slips for those left out. The final list came out on August 31, 2019. It included 3.11 crore people. About 19 lakh applicants missed the cut.
Islam says the state must provide documents to help people seek legal remedies. "Those whose names appear in the final NRC should receive national identity cards, while the 19 lakh people excluded from the list should be issued rejection slips so they can appeal their cases," Islam said. The AIUDF has fought this in court for years.
The party has filed several writ petitions and Interlocutory Applications with the Supreme Court. The court expects responses from both state and central governments. The Registrar General of India already filed an affidavit. Lawyers are now writing a counter-affidavit for the next hearing. That hearing takes place next month.
