Guwahati: Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi took aim at the Centre on July 16. The Raijor Dal chief warned that the proposed One Nation, One Election Bill would trigger a massive nationwide revolt. He spoke to reporters in Guwahati and blasted the plan as a clear move to dismantle the federal structure of the country. He thinks the change turns a federal democracy into a unitary state.
Gogoi pulled no punches. He labeled the legislation a fascist power grab. "One Nation, One Election is an attempt to transform India from a federal structure into a completely unitary one. It is a fascist move. We will never allow this attempt to dismantle our federal structure—where the Union and State governments coexist," he stated.
The legislator claims the plan violates both the Constitution and basic democratic principles. He demands the Centre pull the bill immediately. He compared the current administration to authoritarian regimes, calling the specific restructuring attempt "a Hitler-esque move."
The proposal for simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies remains a hot button issue. Opposition parties continue to question the logic and legality of the scheme. Gogoi insists citizens will hit the streets to protect the republic if the push continues.
