Assam Leaders Honor Quit India Movement Martyrs

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma honored the freedom fighters who died during the 1942 Quit India Movement on Sunday, September 20. He specifically remembered Kanaklata Barua, Mukunda Kakati, Tileswari Barua, Bhogeswari Phukanani, and Manbar Nath. He called them heroes.

Sarma took to X to share his thoughts on the historic uprising. "On this day in 1942, Assam rose with the nation in the historic Quit India Movement," Sarma wrote. He praised their resolve to fly the Tricolour, citing their courage and patriotism as motivation for the state.

Assam minister Jayanta Mallabaruah also honored the fallen. He highlighted the specific deaths of 17-year-old Kanaklata Barua and Mukunda Kakati. Police shot them dead at Gohpur on September 20, 1942. They were part of a march headed to the police station to hoist the national flag.

Mallabaruah urged citizens to remember these sacrifices. He wants people to focus on their duty to the nation. He asked them to work selflessly for India.
