Assam Issues Flood Alerts After NEEPCO Opens Khandong Dam Gates

Guwahati: The Kapili River is rising fast. Seven gates at the Khandong Dam in Umrangso opened on Sunday after heavy rains pushed reservoir levels to the brink. Downstream, the water is moving hard and turning foamy as the surge hits the riverbanks.

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation warned 18 districts across Assam to prepare for trouble. They told local officials to clear out people living in low-lying spots near the water. Stay away from the river. Authorities want residents to keep their guard up while teams watch the banks to stop accidents from happening.

The corporation issued a clear advisory to the district administrations, urging them to alert residents who are "residing near the river and vulnerable low-lying areas." Officials are now working with local agencies to manage the flow and keep people safe from the rising water.
