Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have issued a precautionary flood alert for the Kopili valley following continuous rainfall in the Khandong catchment area. Rising water levels at the Kopili Reservoir in the Dima Hasao district may necessitate the gradual opening of spillway gates starting on the night of June 18 to ensure the dam remains at a safe operating capacity.

Officials confirmed they will provide periodic updates regarding gate operations and release volumes through mobile and WhatsApp channels. Local authorities have been directed to warn residents living along the riverbanks and in downstream areas of the potential for rising water levels. The administration warned citizens to exercise caution when near the river and to keep livestock at a safe distance to prevent accidents.

The current situation is compounded by the ongoing reservoir filling process at the Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project in Longku. Officials stated, "the volume of water flowing further downstream from Longku will depend on the operation of the LKHEP dam gates." Residents in low-lying and vulnerable regions are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow official instructions as the situation develops.
