Guwahati: Thousands of trained Home Guards in Assam are out of work. The Nalbari District Committee of the All Assam Home Guards Volunteers' Welfare Association sent a demand to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. They want the state to turn their training into steady paychecks.

The numbers do not add up. Assam counts 28,696 trained volunteers on its books, but the state only funds 16,500 jobs. This leaves a massive chunk of the force with no work. Even those lucky enough to get a spot only pull duty for six months a year. This makes feeding a family a constant struggle.

Nalbari paints a grim picture. Out of 711 trained guards, 367 have no jobs. The association sent a copy of their plea to Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. They argue that the state's massive growth creates an obvious need for more security personnel. Major projects now dot the region, including a new medical college, a stadium, and a District Commissioner's office.

The group claims these projects are perfect spots for deployment. The association stated that such measures would "not only strengthen public service delivery but also provide trained personnel with stable employment and a sustainable source of livelihood." They want these trained professionals on the job for good.
