Assam Head Constable Dies in Tamulpur Outpost Shooting

Guwahati: Ghanakanta Malakar took his own life Wednesday night. The 51-year-old head constable died at the Darangamela Police Outpost in Assam's Tamulpur district. He was assigned to Platoon No. 3 of the 24th Assam Police Battalion.

The incident occurred around 11:40 pm. Malakar entered the outpost bathroom and shot himself in the head with his service 9 mm carbine. He had returned to his post just days prior after finishing a leave period at his home in Pathsala, Bajali district.

Authorities sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators have yet to determine a motive for the shooting, stating that the "reason behind the alleged suicide is yet to be ascertained."
