Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly meets July 6 to kick off its latest budget session. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah will present the state's full budget for the 2026-27 financial year on July 10. Lawmakers have 16 scheduled sittings to work through the session, which runs until July 31.
This marks the first full financial plan under the Himanta Biswa Sarma administration since the National Democratic Alliance returned to power. The BJP secured a dominant 82 seats in the 126-member House. Allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front each claimed 10 seats to solidify the majority. The assembly schedule noted the scale of the win, stating, "The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 82 seats to secure its first-ever single-party majority in the state."
The state previously operated under a vote-on-account budget. Former Finance Minister Ajanta Neog presented that interim measure on February 17, authorizing 62,294.78 crore rupees to cover government costs. Now, the new ministry prepares to shift gears. Congress leads the Opposition with 19 seats, while smaller parties including the Raijor Dal, AIUDF, and Trinamool Congress fill out the remaining spots in the chamber.
