Guwahati: Forest officials struck the Bhalukdubi weekly market in Goalpara today. They seized a haul of illegal furniture valued at more than Rs 5 lakh. The raid targeted local shops running without valid permits.

Goalpara Regional Forest Officer Pabitra Roy led the operation. His team confiscated beds, cots, and various wooden goods. The crackdown followed a wave of complaints from local residents about black-market timber trade in the area.

Roy confirmed the department acted on reports that traders had been running this illicit business for a long time. "The department launched the operation based on public complaints that a section of traders had been carrying out the illegal furniture business at the market for a long time," Roy said.

The department plans to stay aggressive. Officials warned that they will keep running enforcement drives across the district. They want to stop forest law violations for good.
