Guwahati: The main monastery at Chamaria Satra is falling apart. The historic building is sinking into the earth and rain pours through its roof. Portions of the northern wall show severe decay. Residents fear the structure is on the brink of collapse.
Sri Sri Bor Bishnu Ata founded the site in 1588 under the direction of Mahapurush Madhavdeva. Workers finished the current building in 1771 under Ahom king Swargadeo Lakshmi Singha. That king once granted the site 800 bighas of land via a copper plate. It remains a vital hub for Neo-Vaishnavite traditions.
The monastery has not seen a major repair since 1940. Satra officials claim the Archaeology Department blocked local efforts to fix the building about four or five years ago. Now, the community is demanding an immediate assessment from the state.
"The main monastery has started sinking into the ground, while rainwater enters the building through the roof," stated the Satra administration. Locals want professional, scientific conservation to stop the rot. They worry that waiting any longer will ruin a key piece of Assam history forever.
