Guwahati: Assam is tightening the screws on government contractors. Officials met July 4 to force better GST compliance and stop tax evasion across state departments. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the session with empanelled contractors to demand transparency in all financial transactions.

Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the state needs every cent to fund public projects. The government wants to see cleaner books and faster revenue growth. Baruah claimed that "fair taxation is vital for building a stronger economy" during his post-meeting briefing on X.

Accountability is the new mandate. The government aims to protect public funds by watching how contractors handle their tax duties. Every rupee now counts toward state development.
