Assam Court Sentences Man to 20 Years for Minor’s Rape

Guwahati: A court in Assam’s Kokrajhar district has sentenced Sanuwar Hussain to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl. The verdict follows a 2022 case registered at the Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station where investigators accused the Tintila village resident of luring the victim into a relationship to commit sexual assault.

The Kokrajhar Sessions Judge’s Court found Hussain guilty under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. According to the prosecution, the victim became pregnant as a direct result of the repeated abuse.

The court also ordered the convict to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. If he fails to pay this amount, he will face an additional six months of incarceration. Legal experts noted that this "judgment is being viewed as a significant conviction under the POCSO Act, aimed at ensuring justice for child victims of sexual assault."
