Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma blasted the 1975 Emergency on Thursday. He called the period a calculated move to wreck India’s democratic structure and kill civil rights. The Chief Minister shared his thoughts on social media to honor the people who stood up against the crackdown.
"We remember that dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy, when in 1975 the Emergency was imposed in an attempt to crush the country’s democratic values and civil liberties. Humble salutations to all the brave warriors who struggled to protect democracy," Sarma wrote.
The Emergency started under Article 352 of the Constitution. It lasted from June 25, 1975, until March 21, 1977. Since 2025, the Narendra Modi government has officially marked June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. Officials use the day to spotlight what they call a massive abuse of power that led to widespread suffering for citizens.
