Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that Dr. Habbey Teron is the official candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Dr. Teron serves as the MLA for the Amri (ST) Hills constituency.
Sarma shared the news on social media, emphasizing that the nomination highlights the government commitment to inclusive political representation for tribal communities. He noted that the move is designed to strengthen the legislative voices of the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao regions.
As a medical professional, Dr. Teron holds the distinction of being the first elected representative from the newly established Amri constituency. Regarding the appointment, the Chief Minister said, "I am pleased to announce that Dr. Habbey Teron, Hon’ble MLA from Amri (ST) Hills, will be our candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly."
Political observers view the selection as a significant effort to increase the participation of hill district representatives in the state's legislative processes. Sarma expressed his full confidence in Dr. Teron as he prepares to take on this new constitutional responsibility.
