Guwahati: The 16th Assam Legislative Assembly officially convened today for the first of four scheduled sittings. This initial session, which will continue on May 21, 22, 25, and 26, began with the appointment of senior BJP legislator Chandra Mohan Patowary as the Pro-tem Speaker by the state Governor. Patowary led the formal opening by administering the oath of office to all newly elected members.

Legislative work is moving quickly as the House prepares to elect a permanent Speaker later today. A central focus for this session is the proposed Uniform Civil Code Bill, which has already received approval from the State Cabinet. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the government intends to introduce and pass the legislation during these proceedings to fulfill key campaign promises.
