Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that Tawang will host the second edition of the World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) championship in August 2026. The decision follows a meeting between the Chief Minister and members of the WPC Tawang Unit to discuss new initiatives for regional youth development.
Khandu emphasized that the event aims to drive physical fitness and sporting excellence across the state. By providing a professional platform, the tournament helps aspiring athletes gain the experience needed to succeed in broader competitions. The inaugural event proved to be a success, as many participants later secured gold medals at both state and national level powerlifting contests.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the long-term impact of these events, noting their ability to foster talent and motivate the next generation. He said, "such events play a crucial role in nurturing talent and motivating young people to pursue excellence in sports." Organizers and participants have received the full support of the state as they prepare for the 2026 competition, which is expected to further strengthen the position of Arunachal Pradesh in the national powerlifting circuit.
