Itanagar: MLA Oken Tayeng spearheaded a massive tree-planting operation in East Siang district on July 5. The event hit Ayeng and Kiyit villages within the Mebo Sub-Division to celebrate Van Mahotsav. Local administration officials and volunteers turned out in force for the Eco Clean Mebo Mission.
Residents from the Baba 11 team and the Siyon Sirum group handled the digging and planting. Tayeng told the crowd that planting trees acts as a safety net for the region. He noted that forests provide clean air, stop soil erosion, and fight climate change. It is about more than just looks.
Survival matters. Mission Manager Olen Megu Damin warned that planting is only half the battle. He pushed the locals to keep nursing the young trees long after the event ends. Success rests on this follow-up work.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Nancy Yirang echoed those concerns. She wants the community to own the growth of these trees. She stated, "protecting the saplings is the community's greatest responsibility." Everyone from village headmen to local volunteers promised to keep the saplings alive to build a greener future.
