Guwahati: The Assam Centre for Rural Development launched a district-wide drive against child trafficking in Dibrugarh. This effort aligns with the National Campaign Against Child Trafficking. The initiative kicked off on the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. ACRD plans to coordinate with local government departments, law enforcement, and child welfare groups to shield minors from harm.
This mission grew out of a four-day consultation in New Delhi held by Just Rights for Children. JRC represents a network of over 250 civil society groups operating in 782 districts. They aim to make India free from child trafficking by 2030. Records show these partners rescued 122,516 children between April 2023 and December 2025.
ACRD Director Prerna Changkakoti highlighted the gravity of the situation. She noted, "child trafficking as one of India's most serious social challenges." Official data indicates 11 children vanish every hour, while six are trafficked and five forced into labor every single day. Traps often involve false promises of work or schooling aimed at poor families.
The campaign focuses on identifying at-risk households and connecting them to government welfare programs. It prioritizes keeping kids in school while pushing for legal action against criminals. ACRD will provide legal assistance to victims and oversee the rehabilitation of rescued youth in partnership with local authorities.
